I was hoping to get over to the new house at 4:00, but I had a meeting that ran long so I didn't end up getting there until almost 5:00! Fortunately Marty's parents came early to help me get ready. Marty's Mom decorated the room and I decorated and put the food on the table.
The dining room had light and dark pink streamers and 'Happy Birthday' banners hanging from the ceiling, doorways and windows, and there were balloons in the corners and in the windows. The table had a 'birthday' tablecloth and various decorations along with the food and punch.
The buffet consisted of a party platter of small deli sandwiches and a party platter of fruits and cheeses (from Harris Teeter). I made some ranch dip and had potato chips and there was also some candy and cupcakes. The punch was pink and made up of Hawaiian punch, ginger ale, club soda, and raspberry sherbet (very tasty).
Everyone else arrived about 6:00 and Steve and Wanda and Emma gave Samantha her birthday presents. Steve gave her a set of 'Little People' toys that was a barn and a tractor with various farm animals (she really liked the chicken and the cow!). We showed Samantha the beautiful wicker furniture that Emma got for her (she had the cushions specially made!) and Samantha really enjoyed sitting in her chair and playing with the farm animals. Steve gave Samantha the Spin N Say which she will really enjoy because she loves mimicking animal sounds. Wanda set up the little musical tea set on the wicker table and Samantha had a good time playing with the teapot (which made music) and the cups and spoons. Thank goodness they are plastic!! Meanwhile, Janie and the men were putting together Samantha's little push car (that Wanda picked out). After it was put together we sat Samantha in it. She loved opening and closing the door and rolling forwards and backwards and kept pushing the horn (which made music). She seemed to really like her new car!
After playing with her new toys for a while, it was time for cake! We lit her little candle and sang 'Happy Birthday' to her and tried to get her to blow out the candle - a little too young for that yet. So I helped her blow out her candle and gave her some punch in her sippy cup. I was afraid she was going to get sick because she drank about half a cup of punch in about 10 seconds flat! She really liked the punch. She ate a little of the cake and seemed to especially like the frosting with the sprinkles. But she was getting tired by then and was not very hungry (especially after drinking all that punch!).
We gave her the rest of her presents after that. My aunt and uncle, Charles and Nancy, had sent a present and Samantha had fun tearing it open. It was 3 outfits which are a little big for her now but we look forward to growing in to because they are really cute! Next Marty's parents gave Samantha a little Winnie the Pooh airplane that she can sit on and press buttons which make the propeller turn and light up and play music. Samantha really liked it - every time one particular song plays she dances! After that, I gave Samantha her present from Marty and myself. It was a drum with several different 'animal' instruments inside. She has been using the drumsticks to hit everything (and everyone) in sight ever since! After that we took Samantha out of her high chair and let her play with her toys for a bit. I did not know that Thea had brought a present for Samantha as well, so just before Thea left she gave Samantha her gift. It was a squishy stuffed salamander - hot pink on the top and green on the bottom. Samantha loved the texture and colors and hugged it right away - it was so cute!
Shortly after that everyone left (except Marty's parents who helped me clean up). All in all, Samantha made a HAUL this birthday and she didn't seem to stop laughing and making funny (excited) noises the whole time. I think she had a wonderful first birthday.
Happy Birthday to my Samantha girl! Mommy and Daddy love you.
